The day before the move.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022Defrost and empty refrigerators into a portable esky with ice. On the moving day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022Have your personal luggage, essentials boxes, survival and handy-man kit on hand. After moving.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022Before the removalists leave, check there’s no obvious damage to any furniture and check the inventory of items to ensure everything is accounted for, and sign documentation if the move is from storage, interstate or overseas. \u2022Transfer your Home and Contents Insurance to your new home.
\u2022Arrange kindergarten, school and day-care transfers.
\u2022Look at the floor plan of your new home and measure spaces for furniture placement i.e. fridge. Will large items fit through doors?
\u2022Prepare an inventory of items, noting existing scratches and dents, as well as any
items requiring special care to move.
\u2022Check moving instructions for your washing machine, fridge and other large electrical items with the manufacturer. This information can be found in your instruction manual or on the manufacturer\u2019s website.
\u2022Use up food, especially open packets and items in the freezer, and dispose of out-of-date items.
\u2022Create a folder or box for important documents and valuables to carry these with you on moving day.
\u2022Throw away, recycle or donate unwanted items from the garage, shed and underthe house.
\u2022Dispose properly of all flammable liquids.
\u2022Arrange a rubbish pick-up with the local council or book a skip.
\u2022Schedule any necessary repairs to the interior or exterior of the property.
\u2022Research storage facilities (if needed).
\u2022Organise tickets, visas, currency, credit cards and accommodation if travelling overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022Pack and label boxes clearly.
\u2022Prepare an inventory of items for each box.
\u2022Clearly mark FRAGILE boxes.
\u2022Pack lighter items in large boxes and heavier items in small boxes; the heaviest items at the bottom.

\u2022Consider re-directing your mail with Australia Post.
\u2022Cancel or transfer subscriptions and memberships.
\u2022Return borrowed or rented items.
\u2022Arrange to move boat, trailer and caravan.

\u2022Fill medical prescriptions.
\u2022Arrange final readings of gas and electricity meters.
\u2022If required, arrange time off work to move.
\u2022Book cleaners.
\u2022Create a handy-man kit with tools like allen keys, screwdrivers, light bulbs etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022Water indoor plants lightly and pack into plastic lined boxes.
\u2022Back-up computer and associated equipment ready for moving.
\u2022Drain fuel from the lawnmower, whipper snippers etc.
\u2022If required, arrange access and parking for removalist’s truck.
\u2022Create an Essentials Box with things like remote controls for TV, Foxtel and instructions for reassembly of items.
\u2022Disassemble furniture – tape any screws in an obvious location or label and place in your essentials box.
\u2022Check you will have the keys and relevant instructions for your new home on the day of your move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022Pack personal luggage i.e. pyjamas, toiletries and a fresh change of clothes.
\u2022Unplug and tie up cords.
\u2022Prepare an action plan for moving day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022Provide a copy of floor plan with furniture placement to the removalist.
\u2022Ask the removalist to load kitchen boxes last so they are first off the truck.
\u2022Ensure gas and electricity metres have been read and house key collection and cleaner has been organised.
\u2022Check off the inventory of items as boxes are loaded into the removalist’s truck.
\u2022Check the tops of cupboards, garden areas, sheds and garage.
\u2022Lock all the doors and windows and check the gas, electricity and hot water systems are turned off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022Notify removalists immediately if anything is missing.
\u2022Check all utilities are connected, including the hot water system.
\u2022Assemble beds and make them up as soon as possible.
\u2022Check cleaners have been to the old house and inspect the job. If applicable, return keys to the real estate agent.
\u2022Contact the local council to find out garbage collection information and register pets if required.
\u2022Return boxes to the removalists, sell, recycle or save for your next move.
\u2022Keep cats inside for a few days to get them used to their new home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
